Owner spends $400 at the vet's because their 14-year-old cat stopped eating, only to find out that the diva suddenly doesn't like the only food she's eaten for over a decade: 'Literally everything came back normal'

 What's the silliest thing you've ever had to take your cat to the vet for?

We have all been there, right? We, as cat owners, are paranoid. It is that simple. We know cats, and we know that cats do not like showing when they are sick. When my kitty had a fever, it took me a whole week to notice that something was wrong, and I only noticed because I felt that she was physically hotter. She didn't want me to know. They never do. And so… we pay attention. If anything seems ever so slightly off, we don't mess around. We immediately take our cats to the vet. Better safe than sorry. Always. But that does mean that we sometimes take them to the vet over… silly reasons. 

And vet trips are expensive. We can tell you this - while it is happening, while you're concerned for your cat's health and worried that something might legitimately be wrong, it's not funny. Afterward, when you find out that your cat, like mine, just got spooked by something, and that is why she started limping while running, and you have to pay hundreds of dollars for the vet visit… it is still not funny. Much, much later, when recalling the story of your cat's expensive fart, that is when it becomes funny. It's also funny when it happens to other people, which is why today's story is so, so amusing. $400 at the vet's, and why? Because the cat who has spent ten years eating nothing but one brand of food suddenly decided that they don't like that food anymore. And that means going on a hunger strike. At age 14. With no explanation. Oh, it really is a good thing that we love them as much as we do.

    She will only eat gravy lovers wet food. For over a decade, she has rejected every wet food and gravy treat except for Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers. 10 days ago she stopped eating except for a few bites of food a day and all the treats we would give her.

    Vet ran a battery of blood tests: everything was normal. Normal thyroid, normal kidney/liver functions, no pancreatitis, normal red/white blood cell count. Literally everything came back normal.

    The next step would have been an $800 X-ray to view her abdomen for possible issues. We decided to try an appetite stimulant first.

    I picked her up from the vet yesterday but forgot the meds. My husband gave her a different can of wet food for dinner. She ate it immediately.

  • At the end of the day, when things like this happen, we try to remind ourselves that as infuriating as it is, it's still so much better than something actually being wrong with our babies.

  • Had the same thing happen with my cat. Suddenly, after 8 years, she stopped eating the food that she loved for no reason, sent me into a panic, sent herself to the vet, and blamed me for everything.

    $600 later and we're told he's in incredible health for his age. We moved his litter box to do some cleaning and he immediately used it. He just wanted a change of scenery for his bathroom breaks, I guess

    irfulvas It could be a bad batch or the packaging wasn't properly sealed. I bought the same food once and my cats decided not to eat it. I smelled it and it had a more floury smell, not as rich. The next packs they ate normally.

Which checked out because right before that she'd just had her porch privileges taken away for wandering off. Which she had never done before because the little diva didn't like the feel of grass on her paws.
